I've had this ice maker for almost a year. It makes fine, and is fairly quiet. My chief complaint is that it gets MOLDY, very quickly. What's even worse is that due to the design, I cannot even tell (see) if I removed all the mold due to hidden areas.

Purchased our second one after 11 years. A year ago we replaced the pump. The pump went bad again for the second time and missed the warranty cutoff by a couple days. Instead of buying a new part at around $400, we opted to buy a new one. Three times a year I clean the system. The first ice maker had no filter. The new feature on the one we just bought does have a filter.
We've bought Kitchenaid products for the past 15 years. The only reason we went back to the kitchen aid ice maker is because it recesses back into our cabinets perfectly. Hopefully, we'll have this one for 12+ years.
On another note: if you are looking at the slide in range with glass top, think twice. Prior to this range we had a GE.
we never had a scratch! The Kitchen Aid glass top scratches, and that's even cooking with Al-Clad. We will not be purchasing another glass top range from KitchenAid.

We just set up our ice maker. Mostly easy, but then I didn't really do anything. A couple of things we learned.
1. Have a means to getting to the back of the ice maker so as to line up the drain.
2. Consider putting on the end of cabinets. The handle to open the door hits cabinets.
3. Order filter. Can not find in stores.
4. Be prepared for noise.
5. Needs a special cleaning liquid about every 9 months.
Make ice pretty quickly.

The ice is great! However, we hear a lot of loud popping noises that come from this ice maker. It sounds like it is a shut off valve for the water line. It's very loud and really disturbs the dog.
I would love for Kitchenaid to contact me about this issue. My builder reached out to the supplier and I still have not hear back.

My previous ice maker was a Sub-zero and it lasted 20 years. They do not make this model anymore and a upgraded model was almost $2500. I found this Model KitchenAid at Lowe's coupled with my Lowe's discount of 5% plus the price was reduced by 10% on this particular model, which also had a limited warranty on it for 3 years by the manufacturer without any additional cost, it became a no brainer. It has performed as stated in the literature for this model. However, it required a water filter to operate, and this did not come with the machine. The cost of the filter was around $40 which must be changed every 6 months. So far I have no complaints with the new machine and it makes very little noise compared to my sub-zero model. If I had a complaint, it would be that it is not 18" in width. I have a void that I must deal with because Ice machine was built into an island counter in my kitchen.

We bought this ice maker when we moved into our new location in 2014 and have had a series of issues with it. Water line popping off about every other month. (three service calls for that!) Finally, I installed a metal clamp myself where the line connects inside the machine. Many other issues. Heating element that cuts the cubes burned out. Goes into defrost mode for days on end. This is a very cheaply made, yet expensive product. KitchenAid used to be known for High Quality until Whirlpool bought them. I DO NOT recommend buying this product! We will be replacing ours with a Samsung or some other dependable brand

Broke again!
Shelleyboo
9/25/2018
I purchased this icemaker in August of 2017 and received it in September of 17. It has been broke more than it works. It is Model #KUIX505ESS. The same problem keeps happening and they want to keep "fixing" it. After numerous phone calls and chats, without resolving the situation I am still without ice and a 2000.00 lemon of an icemaker. I will never purchase anything from Kitchen Aid/Maytag again since they cannot stand behind their products.
The transcript's of our conversations via chat I have yet to receive and they cannot or will not do anything to help. In the meantime, I have to repair my ceiling and my kitchen and I still have a defective, non working ice maker for the third week and for a third to half of the year I have owned this icemaker.

We have now purchased two of these ice makers and both have failed within a year. We clean the machine and replace filters religiously, per the owners manual. The first ice maker was misdiagnosed, the repair company was of no help. Now we are now on our second machine and it just quite making ice (literally only a year old). Please look elsewhere, do not spend $2K on a product that will only last one year. Would not recommend this machine to my worst enemy.

Ice Maker Failed in 16 months!
Disappointed4now
7/31/2018
My wife and I are long time Kitchen Aid users. My wife being a private chef she owns almost every small appliance Kitchen Aid makes, along with 2-6 qt mixers and 2-8 qt mixers. We also own 8 major appliances: Bottom Freezer refrigerator, built in Convection oven, with a built in Microwave convection cooking, wine frig, additional refrigerator, bar frig, gas grille & ice maker. My wife loves every Kitchen Aid product because they make it at a professional level.. Except!
After 16 months of ownership the ice maker the compressor failed. I thought it might still have warranty but the repair place told me it was built in Sept of 2015. I purchased this in either late 2016 or early 2017 The quote to repair the ice maker was $700 and by the time it was completed it was over $1000.00. From what I am told they changed the compressor motor (mine failed) so I also had to purchase some sort of conversion wire harness. To say I am disappointed is a small statement.

We've had this ice maker for over three years and all was great until we noticed black mold growing in the back. We are cleaning it and replacing the filter again after only 5 months. Love the ice it makes and look of it so don't want to change but........anyone else have these issues?

We bought this 45 days ago replacing a much more expensive Scotsman unit. The clear ice quality is wonderful. We believe this design is far superior due to the front load water filter which will not only provide for better quality ice but should also extend the life of the ice machine.

Installation Procedure Needs More Detail
MLD4332
3/6/2018
Makes ice well, but hopefully it will last much longer than our previous KitchenAid Automatic Ice Maker, especially considering the cost of the unit. We spent hundreds on repairs once the machine stopped functioning properly, but the prior unit never did work properly after a few years of service and hence the replacement.
The installation instructions need some work. A good idea would be to have one of your technical writers actually observe someone of normal mechanical skill actually installing the equipment. The instructions aren't bad, there just is not enough detail to make the installation as effortless as possible.
Also, when one purchases the unit, it should be stated very clearly that an additional (and expensive) pump/motor must be separately purchased unless the unit will drain to a floor drain (which is highly unlikely in the vast majority of household installations).

We installed this in March 2016 and by November, the condenser fan died. Luckily, Kitchenaid's warranty had a tech out to replace it with a stronger fan unit. Fast forward to Feb 2018 and the metal grids that cut the ice snapped. Again, a tech came out and replaced it quickly. Now that it's running again, the ice sensor doesn't seem to be working and it's making too much ice. Hopefully KitchenAid's warranty will come to the rescue. I give this two stars because I don't think a unit should break this often, especially for what it costs. It does make plenty of ice and is worth it if you entertain a lot. If you're going to buy this, make sure you invest in the extended warranty.

I received a Kitchenaid icemaker yesterday. We are replacing an older model . We installed it, but were unable to test it because the required filter was not included. Instead I found a 15% coupon (which, by the way, had expired on Dec 31, 2016). Not including the filter is a cheap and shoddy practice which does not reflect well on the Kitchenaid brand. This is a fairly expensive high-end item. I was disappointed that all of the required parts were not included. I will revise rating when we can actually run it.

This is our second ice maker, replacing a similar one we had for 7 years before it blew up (not sure why). This one is much more quiet operation, which is a major plus. The only negative so far is the door to the controls won't stay up, which is the only reason I gave an overall rating of 4! Ice Makers are notorious for failure, but this one came with 3 yr warranty and we purchased the extended warranty just in case.

We bought a Kitchenaid ice maker 1 year ago along with a refridgerator, an in-wall oven and a gas cooktop, all Kitchenaid. So far we are on our 3rd Ice-maker and the 3rd repair for this ice maker. I can't believe that an appliance company like Kitchenaid dont know how to make ice. We moved into our new home in November of 2016. 2 weeks after we moved in, the ice maker stopped working. It took 2 weeks to get a repairman out to work on it. They received the part but it was the wrong one. They did not return until January to fix it. We went through the holiday celebrations without the ice maker. The reason we bought the ice maker is because we are always entertaining and always needing to go get ice. Now we are almost $2000.00 out and still going to get ice. The repairman came back 2 or 3 more times and the ice maker still did not work. RC Willey, where we bought the appliances, returned the ice maker and sent out another one that looked to be refurbished. It worked for about a month and stopped. The service man came out once again, made a repair and it worked for another few weeks. It stopped again so we demanded a new ice-maker. RC Willey delivered a brand new ice maker. We plugged it in, made all of the connections, turned it on and water was running down the inside of the door. The repairman returned again and found a plastic fitting was cracked in the weld and was spraying water all over the inside. We opted to just get the replacement part. He replaced the part in June or July and the ice maker worked until last week. It will not hold ice. The ice is melting faster than the maker will make it and the design for the drain is the worst design I have ever saw. Since it slides under our counter, i had to modify a funnel to catch th water for the drain otherwise it is flooding our kitchen floor. We are looking into other brands that are dependable and are true ICE-MAKERS not just a waste of water, electricity, time and money! One star is too many for this product

Mostly good, but maintenance is no fun
GarryV
11/13/2017
We've had this ice maker for about 10 mos and it has mostly been great. Lots of crystal clear ice. The bad: maintenance is difficult, at least the first go around. I've always heard ice makers are a real pain to maintain and this one does not disappoint. We started to develop the same mold issue mentioned in some posts. If you look at the manual, the unit requires some disassembly and cleaning every 9 mos. It's not easy! Do you yourself a favor and get yourself a 1/4" nut driver as that is what most of the fasteners are. Also, carefully note how things are assembled before you disassemble as the manual does not do a great job of listing out the steps. Once disassembled, you can clean all parts up good as new. I know how things go together now, so next time won't be so bad. One last hint: when working on this unit put something in the drain hole because the nuts are the perfect size to drop in there and never be seen again. I learned that tip the hard way.

We had a Kitchenaode Icemaker similar to this model for ELEVEN years with minimum repair. These machines are notorious for high maintainencevsovwexwere well aware of what it meant for maintainence. We had few complaints & loved the ice. It came time to replace the old model with a new one. We called Kiychenaide & was told that the old model was no longer available so we took their recommendation & got this one. It is not working! So, now we are awaiting a replacement & are hoping this was just a lemon. Very disappointed & very inconvenienced. Where is the quality that Kitcheaid brand stands for?
